The digitally inserted ad boards the NHL has introduced as part of its TV broadcasts this season failed several times during Monday’s Sportsnet telecast of the Vancouver Canucks vs. St. Louis Blues game at Rogers Arena.
Instead of displaying ads while the game was on, the computer-generated images were black, creating a strange-looking ring around the rink for TV viewers.
The technology allows TV broadcasts to overlay advertisements along the rink boards when the main camera angle is in use, so instead of seeing the physical ads pasted onto the boards, TV viewers see a digital display aligned with where the boards are on the screen.
