The Vancouver Canucks placed goaltender Spencer Martin on waivers Monday with the purpose of assigning him to the club’s AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.
Martin, 27, has suffered 10 straight regulation losses and has an 11-15-1 National Hockey League record this season with a bloated 3.99 goals-against average and lowly .871 saves percentage.
It means injured starter Thatcher Demko is obviously closer to returning to the net and, in the interim, Martin will still dress Monday until he’s either claimed or demoted Tuesday morning. Martin will back up Collin Delia on Monday against the Detroit Red Wings while Demko continues to progress.
The Canucks host the New York Rangers on Wednesday.
