A South Seattle man was shot to death after a confrontation with police shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday night.

At 10:56 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 64th Avenue South and South Bangor Street and found a medical emergency in the street, Deputy Chief Nick Metz said.

“An individual who lived in the house over here called 911 through his alarm company saying that he believed there was a prowler at his house,” Metz said near the 6300 block of South Bangor Street. “He seemed to be in an agitated – this is according to the alarm company.”

The man told the alarm company he had a gun and wasn’t afraid to use it, police said.

An officer who had come to assist medics on the aid response, as did two other officers, and the three approached the man’s house.

“When they got up to the house they saw an individual standing at the threshold of the doorway holding a gun in his hand,” Metz said. “The officers made several very loud commands to drop the gun, drop the gun. These commands were heard by numerous witnesses in the area.”

The man raised the gun toward the uniformed officers, and two of the three fired, investigators said.

Additional medics responded at 11:08 p.m. to help the firefighters already there, but the man died at the scene. It was not clear how many shots were fired.

“We have not established yet if that was the homeowner,” Metz said at the scene.

The officers involved were being interviewed by homicide detectives shortly after midnight Monday and were expected to be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard in officer-involved shootings. Police did not immediately give details about the three officers who approached the armed man.

It was not clear what happened with the first medical emergency in the street.

The victim’s name was not released, pending official family notification. Several distraught people came to the police scene shortly after 12:30 a.m. Monday. Metz did not know if additional people were in the home at the time of the shooting.

This is the second officer-involved shooting this year in Seattle. The first happened Sept. 3 when police fired at a wanted felon who investigators said tried to drive an SUV over one of the officers. The man was not hit. Read more about that case here.
