Attention drunk drivers: If you’re on the road in King County this weekend, there’s a greater chance you’ll be busted for DUI.
Beginning Friday, extra patrols were on the lookout thanks to funding from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. The increased patrols, part of the “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed” campaign, continue through Sept. 3.
Last year during the same time period in King County, officers on routine and extra patrols arrested 452 people for DUI. For all of 2011, in King County, 10,331 people were charged with DUI, according to the Administrative Office of the Courts.
From 2006 to 2010, on average, more Washington impaired-driving deaths occurred in August than any other month, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
Police say drunks often travel slower than the posted speed limit, weave from side to side in lanes and follow to closely. They encourage people who suspect a drunken driver to call 911.
Agencies providing the additional patrols include Seattle, SeaTac, North Bend, the State Patrol, Tukwila, North Bend and Burien. For a full list and more information, click here.
