The rival “independent” groups flooding TV screens with nasty TV spots in the Governor’s race have topped the $20 million mark in contributions reported to the state Public Disclosure Commission, with a lot of mud left to fling.

A massive political money machine — its seven-figure donors have included the Rupert Murdoch media empire — the Republican Governors Association has now committed $11.3 million to the race for Washington Governor, and spent $8.37 million.

Our Washington, a front for the Democratic Governors Association, labor unions and trial lawyers, is up to $8.9 million with $5.7 million spent.  It has just received another $1 million cash infusion from the DGA, bringing contributions by the Democratic governors group to $4.7 million.

The Rob McKenna-Jay Inslee race is considered the hottest gubernatorial contest in the country.  Republicans are “hungry” as GOP State Chairman Kirby Wilbur puts it, because they haven’t won an election for Governor since 1980.

With three weeks to go, combined spending in the state’s marquee race — Inslee and McKenna donations,  front groups, plus Washington Conservation Voters’ spending on behalf of Inslee — is over the $40 million mark.

The front groups’ job is to “go negative,” often with crude cookie-cutter ads — unflattering photos, often in black and white — full of racy innuendo and misleading charges.   The Republican Governors Association has launched relentless attacks against Democrat Inslee.  Our Washington is going after Republican McKenna.  Neither has had a favorable word to say about anybody.
