Eugene police officer shoots and kills man near Churchill High School, officials say

Eugene police shot and killed a 44-year-old man near Churchill High School on Wednesday, prompting staff and students to briefly go on lock down, officials said.

An officer called for emergency cover and a modified lock down at the west Eugene school around 2:45 p.m., said Eugene Police Department spokesman John Hankemeir.

Gunfire erupted shortly after, Hankemeir said. It was not immediately clear how many shots were fired or whether the victim was armed.

The victim was shot outside and to the south of the high school, Hankemeir said. He was dead at the scene.

Students at Churchill and neighboring Kennedy Middle School were on lock down briefly. Students were allowed to leave the high school at around 3:40 p.m.

It remains unclear what sparked the deadly shooting.
