An Estacada motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon after colliding with an SUV near Gaston.

Troy Moody, 50, was riding his motorcycle on Southwest Laurelwood Road when he failed to negotiate an uphill curve and lost control, according to a statement released by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Moody slid with his motorcycle into the opposite lane, where he crashed head-on with a 2000 Dodge Durango driven by Terry Smith, of Beaverton.

The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m., said Ken Bilderback, a spokesman for the Gaston Rural Fire District.  Moody was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 50-year-old passenger in the Durango was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

Southwest Laurelwood Road was closed for about two hours while authorities investigated. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
