Tokyo-based ramen chain Afuri opened its first U.S. location of Kara Kurenai in Old Town-Chinatown. The restaurant’s spicy, yakuzen-style ramen is inspired by Japanese cuisine that marries Chinese herbal medicine with food.
Kara Kurenai’s hot and sour citrus flavor profile is applied to dishes such as spicy tori karaage, Kara Kurenai tsukemen, and a spicy blackberry margarita. The menu offers customizable spice levels, from no spice to very fiery. The restaurant will offer $10 bowls of ramen on August 22 for its grand opening. Afuri Kara Kurenai is located at 50 SW 3rd Avenue, in the space formerly home to Afuri’s ramen and dumpling restaurant.
