S&P 500 rises 1% after paring a much bigger, early gain as uncertainty about Trump’s tariffs reigns

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are rising Tuesday, but big swings are still rocking Wall Street for a second straight day as uncertainty continues to reign about what whether President Donald Trump will ease up on his trade war, which is scheduled to kick into a higher gear after midnight.

The S&P 500 was up 1.2% in afternoon trading, though it still remains nearly 17% below its record set in February. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 540 points, or 1.4%, as of 12:50 Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.9% higher.
