‘It’s evil’: Gold scammers target elderly across Pacific Northwest

A Portland precious metals dealer said one of his customers was targeted in a $170,000 scam, similar to a recent $500,000 fraud case in Clark County.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A Portland coin dealer said one of his customers, an elderly man, nearly lost $170,000 in a gold bar scam last week, similar to a recent fraud case that cost a Clark County woman more than $500,000.

Michael Kakoullis, owner of Portland Precious Metals and Coin, said the incident began Wednesday when an elderly man called asking about buying $150,000 worth of gold bars.
