A massive heat wave is heading straight for Portland this weekend, with forecasts projecting temperatures as high as 111 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday. That’s bad news for food cart owners and restaurant workers in kitchens without air conditioning, who will add a few degrees on to the heat thanks to ovens and gas burners. As opposed to bracing the safety risk of working over a hot stove in triple-digit temperatures, many restaurants and food carts around Portland are choosing to opt out, letting workers stay home to take an ice bath or escape to some cool body of water.
