‘Very rough’: Temporary pause on Oregon oyster harvesting impacted some restaurants, coastal farmers

Weeks after dozens of people were sickened by toxins while harvesting mussels, commercial shellfish activity is slowly reopening.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. — Commercial harvesting of oysters has now reopened in Oregon. Harvesting had been paused since May 26 in Tillamook and Netarts Bay due to a rise in toxins in shellfish, Oregon Department of Agriculture officials said. 

Razor clam harvesting has also reopened in northern Oregon, north of the Yachats River, to the Washington border. Since June 6, commercial gathering of razor clams in northern Oregon had also been paused.

Still, high toxin levels remain in mussels and bay clams. Both are still off limits
