Elias Pettersson’s potential future earnings have kept him from a reunion with his old coach and a chance to represent his homeland at next month’s IIHF World Championships in Finland.
Postmedia has confirmed that the Vancouver Canucks’ star centre has been unable to secure an insurance policy that would protect him against the loss of future earnings, should he sustain a debilitating injury while playing for Sweden.
Sweden’s entry at this year’s worlds is being coached by Sam Hallam, who was Pettersson’s coach at Vaxjo, the Swedish Hockey League team Pettersson starred for in 2017-18, the season before he joined the Vancouver Canucks.
