A 34-year-old St. Paul woman was cited for not stopping at a railroad crossing Friday evening, after a freight train struck her car north of Keizer.
The woman, identified as Graciela Garcia-Soto, was uninjured in the crash. Her 12-year-old daughter, who was riding in the front seat, also was unharmed.
Marion County sheriff’s deputies responded at 6:54 p.m. on Friday to Waconda Road Northeast near East Street. Deputies located a 1999 Dodge Intrepid down an embankment. A 19-car Portland & Western Railroad freight train was stopped on the tracks nearby.
Deputies say Garcia-Soto, the driver of the Dodge, failed to stop at the crossing’s stop sign. The train engineer told deputies he braked and used the horn, but couldn’t avoid hitting the car.
Questioned by deputies, Garcia-Soto couldn’t explain why she didn’t stop for the train. She was cited for failing to stop at an intersection.
Traffic on Waconda Road was backed up for about an hour.
