Steel yourselves, accidental islanders: The West Seattle Bridge won’t reopen this summer.
Yesterday, the Seattle Department of Transportation announced that it’s aiming to wrap up repair work on the cracked span by the week of September 12. That date’s a little later than the original “mid-2022” completion timeline floated when major Jenny Durkan opted to rehab, rather than replace, a 38-year-old bridge with a rocky past.
SDOT program manager Heather Marx tied the regional concrete drivers’ strike to the bridge reopening delay on Thursday. At a West Seattle Bridge Community Task Force meeting, Marx also stressed that “additional unforeseen challenges” could push back the September 12 target.
